The Morty Horror Portal Show

October 19, 2017

I’ve recently become a big fan of the tv-show Rick and Morty, thanks to my little sister watching it daily (and by little, I mean 22-years-old). I’ve always seen the characters well represented at Cons and on nearly every t-shirt website and pop-culture store that I shop, but never took the time watch the show. Once I started watching I blew right through two seasons, it’s hilarious.

Anyway, while planning out new cafe exhibitions at The River Shop, I decided to host one for October that focused on cult films. Artists were invited to submit pieces that recreated their favorite scene, poster, character or were inspired by some film with a cult-like fan base.

I struggled with the idea myself. I always try to make a piece to go into the show just in case there isn’t a lot of participation, and this one stumped me. I wanted to originally do something inspired by the Oogie Boogie scene from The Nightmare Before Christmas, but as I sat down to draw, I was feeling uninspired.

I gave up on the idea and kept contemplating what else I could do, something more original, but interesting. Then it hit me to put animated characters from popular tv series into cult film posters posed as characters in the movies. Win-win!

This works against some of my beliefs, using artistic talents to create works that focus on pre-existing art, characters, or anything in pop-culture, but on the occasion I’ll break away from my norm to do something like cast Rick Sanchez as Dr. Frankenfurter.
